Paul Leonard Powell, Jr., DDS, 74, of Siler City died Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at UNC Healthcare, Chapel Hill.
Dr. Powell was born in Columbus County, NC on June 30, 1944, the son of Paul Leonard Powell, Sr. and Lila Mae (Dyson) Powell. Paul was a 1962 graduate of Whiteville High School, a 1966 graduate of UNC - Chapel Hill and graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry in 1970. Paul owned and operated a private dental practice in Siler City until his retirement in 2015. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War having served in Thailand and Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and chairman of the House and Grounds Committee.
Paul was a member of the Hickory Mountain Rifle and Pistol Club having served as secretary for many years. He was a North Carolina Conceal Carry Instructor, NRA Rifle, Pistol and Personal Protection Instructor and a Range Officer Instructor. He was an assistant coach for Jordan-Matthews Shooting Team and a North Carolina Wildlife Instructor.
Paul was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed flying and Karate for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sherlynn (Dixon) Powell; daughter, Kathryn P. Walters and husband Robert D.; son, Paul Powell III and wife Sherry; grandchildren, Paul Powell IV, Sarah Katherine Walters, Shelby Lynn Walters, Laura Ann Walters, and Anna Catherine Powell; sisters, Mary Frances Pope, Angela P. Arnold, and Deelane P. Reavis.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
