A Laurels of Chatham resident has died in Chatham County's first COVID-19-related death.

The Chatham County Public Health Department announced the passing in a Tuesday afternoon press release. The individual was a resident at The Laurels of Chatham Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and had been "in declining health for some time" before the positive test.

In a statement, Laurel Health Care Company Regional Director of Operations Rob Peck said the center was "deeply saddened to announce the passing" and "extend(ed) our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the family during a time of unthinkable loss."

"While this is certainly something that was to be anticipated with the continued spread of the virus nationwide, it is nevertheless disheartening and we empathize with everyone who has been adversely affected by COVID-19," Peck said. "Please keep our residents, families and associates in your thoughts. We truly appreciate your continued support and understanding."

The site had been deemed the location of an outbreak after six residents and staff initially tested positive for COVID-19. Following universal testing across the facility, a total of 57 individuals had been deemed to have contracted the virus.

In a county press release, Chatham Public Health Director Layton Long said the county was "extremely saddened" by the death and passed on sypathies and prayers to the individual's family.

"Today’s sad news is a stark reminder of how serious the virus is and that all Chatham County residents should remain vigilant in doing their part to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Long said. “Now is not the time to become complacent, and we all must continue following these guidelines: Stay at home except for essential trips, avoid gathering with others who do not live with you, maintain at least six feet of distance from others if you must go out, wear a face covering and wash your hands regularly.”

As of Tuesday, Chatham had 75 residents with positive COVID-19. The county press release stated that "health officials expect North Carolina, including Chatham County, to experience their peak number of cases over the next couple of weeks."
