Letters: A destructive combination

To the editor:

Perpetual ignorance and political correctness are the broad way to hell and will destroy a nation unless action is taken. The action needed is knowledge and a real relationship with God when we begin to recognize evil. A few verses from the Bible: Hosea 4:6 — “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Ephesians 4:18 — “They are darkened in their understanding.” Read the entire verses if you desire.

A few examples of Americans’ ignorance: in 2019, a Lee monument was damaged by some idiots who didn’t know the difference between a Confederate uniform and a World War II one. The Lee attacked was Maj. Gen. William C. Lee, the founder of the U.S. Army Airborne. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and recently some protesters held a memorial service for George Floyd there. Would they have chosen this site had they availed themselves of the fact that Lincoln’s views of the black race were as extreme, if not more so, for his times than any slave-owners? (See “The Real Lincoln” by Charles L.C. Minor.)

The attacks on Confederate monuments has now gone full throttle to include our founding fathers. In Chicago one reverend has asked the mayor to rename Washington and Jackson parks; the Washington of course is George, and this Jackson is Andrew, not Stonewall, the former, very prominent in wining our independence and the latter, protecting it in the War of 1812. These ancestors, as well as our Confederate ones, are our heritage and we must defend them against those who wish to rewrite a politically correct history.

The lack of knowledge leads to ignorant statements made by anti- Americas by equating confederate leaders with Hitler and the Gestapo. The facts will demonstrate any parallels of this sort reside solely with Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Thaddeus Stevens and several others.

Some terms, events and dates you should know: abolitionist, emancipation, secession. Stars and stripes — adopted when? Name five Union states and five Confederate ones. Put the Civil War in its time frame. Confederate states established when? The Corwin amendment was ratified by what states? Have to research more than two and you’re very deficient in history. With all the resources we have today, it’s shameful to remain ignorant of our history.
