Chesapeake, VA – Mrs. Selma Halberg McLaughlin died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Monday, June 11, 2018, at the age of 84.
Selma is survived by her children, David of Silk Hope, NC, Steven of Chesapeake, VA, and Diane of Charlotte, NC; by her brother, William of Orange Village, OH; by her five grandchildren, Dylan, Kyle, Eric, Dexter, and Kimberly; and by her three great-grandchildren, Caden, Liam, and Keagen.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas David McLaughlin of Chesapeake, VA; her sister, Jean Forrest of Shaker Heights, OH; and her brother, Elmer John Halberg of Chagrin Falls, OH.
Selma was born on November 21, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Myrtle and Carl Halberg.  She studied chemistry at The Ohio State University, and graduated in education from the University of Michigan.  In 1954, she married Dr. Thomas McLaughlin, her high school sweetheart, a Certified Public Accountant, banker, and university professor.  Living with her husband in Green Bay, WI,   Dearborn, MI, Tampa, FL, and finally, Chesapeake, VA, she raised three children, taught high school science, and worked as a Certified Tax Preparer.
Selma enjoyed sailing and boating, and gatherings of her extended family.  “There is always room for one more,” was her motto.  The Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves were her favorite teams.  She enjoyed gardening, especially cherishing a rose garden begun by her husband.  She was a member of the Great Bridge chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and active for many years at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Chesapeake.
A funeral service was scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2018, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive, Chesapeake, VA.  All were welcome to attend and celebrate Selma’s life.  Visitation was at Hollomon-Brown, Great Bridge Chapel, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA, on Friday, June 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
