SILER CITY — The First United Methodist Church of Siler City recently recognized scout leaders and Scouts during a recent morning worship service.

The FUMC is the local sponsor for Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop and Venture Crew 924. During the service, scout leaders and youth were presented awards by Rev. William Sabiston, pastor of the church. They were recognized for their completion and fulfillment of the requirements for the Program of Religious Activities with Youth program and the Cross and Flame Award.

The Program of Religious Activities with Youth (P.R.A.Y.) program is a national Bible-based religious emblems recognition program awarded by churches and national youth agencies cooperating with programs of religious activities with youth. It acknowledges distinguished volunteer services by adults in ministry to young people. Youth earn the “God and Me” or the “God and Family” awards by completing requirements of the program. The aim of the program is to foster the Christian growth of children, youth and families through services to the church and agencies such as the Boy Scouts of America. The purpose is to draw young people closer to Christ and help them grow strong in faith and in service to God.

Through the P.R.A.Y. program, adult leaders are nominated, selected and recognized for the “God and Service” award. Scout leaders receiving this award were Annette Wiedner and Jason Burton, each with Cub Scout Pack 924. They support the scouting program and are dedicated and committed to the scouting ideals. They are invaluable mentors to both leaders and youth alike.

The youth earning the award are divided into age groups in the P.R.A.Y. program.

The youth in grades 1 through 3 receiving the God and Me Award were Micah Vasquez, Samuel Vasquez, Eli Hess, Hannah Burton, Eli Kidd, Claire Palmer and Abigail Brame. The youth in grades 4 through 6 receiving the God and Family Award were Collin Palmer, Waylon Bryant and Richie Brame.

The “Cross and Flame” award is an award is given to adult leaders who have given exceptional service in the use and promotion of programs for young people and contributes to the United Methodist Church’s goals in its ministry to youth.
