PITTSBORO — The town of Pittsboro has canceled its 2023 Christmas parade, citing a storm system expected to move through the area on Sunday, Dec. 10.
"After consulting with the Pittsboro Police and Fire Department and our Town Emergency Management Office, the Town has decided to cancel the 2023 Christmas parade due to the high risk of winds above 30 miles per hour and heavy rain," a statement from the town said on Friday.
"This was a difficult decision, but the safety of our parade participants, spectators, and town staff is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, we cannot reschedule this year's parade due to logistical challenges. With this in mind, we will refund everyone over the next week," said Colby Sawyer, the town's public information officer.
The town said it will offer the option of a virtual parade" and is inviting those who planned on participating in the parde to send photos of their groups and floats.
A contest will be held among those participating and gift baskets will be given out to winners, the town said.
