PAUL LEONARD POWELL, JR.

Paul Leonard Powell, Jr., DDS, 74, of Siler City died Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at UNC Healthcare, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Powell was born in Columbus County, NC on June 30, 1944, the son of Paul Leonard Powell, Sr. and Lila Mae (Dyson) Powell. Paul was a 1962 graduate of Whiteville High School, a 1966 graduate of UNC - Chapel Hill and graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry in 1970. Paul owned and operated a private dental practice in Siler City until his retirement in 2015. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War having served in Thailand and Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where he had served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher and chairman of the House and Grounds Committee.

Paul was a member of the Hickory Mountain Rifle and Pistol Club having served as secretary for many years. He was a North Carolina Conceal Carry Instructor, NRA Rifle, Pistol and Personal Protection Instructor and a Range Officer Instructor. He was an assistant coach for Jordan-Matthews Shooting Team and a North Carolina Wildlife Instructor.

Paul was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed flying and Karate for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sherlynn (Dixon) Powell; daughter, Kathryn P. Walters and husband Robert D.; son, Paul Powell III and wife Sherry; grandchildren, Paul Powell IV, Sarah Katherine Walters, Shelby Lynn Walters, Laura Ann Walters, and Anna Catherine Powell; sisters, Mary Frances Pope, Angela P. Arnold, and Deelane P. Reavis.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral was held Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Capital Fund.

GLORIA SHIELDS LOVETTE

Gloria Shields Lovette, 83, of Bear Creek died Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Laurels Of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Mrs. Lovette was born in Moore County on April 1, 1936, the daughter of Roy and Bertha (Willard) Shields. Gloria was retired from Hadley Peoples Manufacturing and a member of the Siler City Church of God. She loved her church and attended services as long as her health allowed. Gloria enjoyed visiting in the neighborhood and spending time with her grandsons.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Patricia Chriscoe; sisters, Shelby Causey, Lena Shields, Ruth Hicks; and brother, Buck Shields.

She is survived by her husband, Dewey Thomas Lovette of Johnson City, Tennessee; sons, Billy Chriscoe of Troy, Ricky Chriscoe of Bear Creek; two grandsons, and two step-grandsons.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral will follow Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Neal Kight officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

WILLIAM HARVEY GAINES

William Harvey Gaines, 89, of Goldston died Monday, April 15, 2019.

Mr. Gaines was born in Chatham County on August 13, 1929, the son of William Donald and Madie Mae (Gaines) Gaines. Harvey had worked in maintenance at Townsend’s Hatchery and Siler City Mills. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers and tractors, playing cards, trips to the mountains and watching baseball, but he was devoted to his family. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gracie Mae Frazier.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Frances (Gunter) Gaines; three daughters, Patricia G. Lemons and husband Larry of Siler City, Judy G. Brooks and Jackie G. Andrew, both of Goldston; one son, Randy Gaines and wife Lisa of Bear Creek; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Gaines Grove Cemetery in Goldston with Pastor Mike Garner officiating.

Memorials may be made to Gaines Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Lucy Gaines Emerson, 135 Oren Gaines Road, Goldston, NC 27252.

Barbara Howard Totten, 84, of Siler City died Thursday, April 11, 2019.

Mrs. Totten was born in Muskogee County, Oklahoma on August 2, 1934, the daughter of Walter H. and Roberta (Robinson) Howard. Barbara was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, a homemaker and had worked in medical records. She enjoyed her morning Bible studies, playing Scrabble and Bridge. She liked to entertain in her home and visiting the Senior Center. She loved her animals and reading. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald H. Totten; her parents; and a granddaughter, Ashley Suits.

Barbara is survived by two daughters, Lezlie Suits and husband Norman of Bear Creek and Tracy Totten of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; and many special and dear friends.

A graveside service was held Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Chatham Memorial Park, 13260 Hwy 64 West, Siler City with Rev. Frank Taylor officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chatham County Animal Shelter.
