Community engagement series on waste, recycling set for March
Do you ever wonder what happens to garbage once it’s thrown out? Are you interested in learning how to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills?
Join us at the Chatham Community Library for a four-part lecture series presented by Shannon Culpepper, Recycling and Education Specialist of Chatham County Solid Waste and Recycling, on Thursday evenings in March to learn about the waste process from beginning to end.

You place your trash in the bin and someone takes it away. Then what? Join Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling to discover how trash is managed in the county. What is going in the trash? How is it hauled? Where does it ultimately get disposed? We will also discuss how the US in general manages waste and how global waste management effects your trash.

Composting: Turning Trash into Treasure
About 25 percent of what we put in landfill’s each year can be composted. Join Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling to learn how easy it is to do at-home composting. Backyard composting options, tips to make the best compost, and the benefits of vermi-composting (composting with worms) will all be discussed.

Reducing your Waste: Waste Not, Want Not
Looking for ways to reduce the amount of waste you create? Recycling and composting are wonderful disposal options, but there are ways to reduce the amount of waste before it is created. Join Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling to learn about some easy/creative steps you can take to reduce your waste.

N.C. State researchers to share progress on ‘Language and Life Project’ in Chatham
In the summer of 2019, the Language and Life Project (LLP), in cooperation with the Chatham County Historical Association started conducting interviews to study and archive changing language and life in Chatham County. The project team has now completed more than 40 interviews with speakers ranging from to 16 to 100 years of age, and plan to complete more than 100 interviews over the next year.
At a Feb. 23 program, the LLP team, under the direction of Walt Wolfram, will discuss the progress of the Chatham project so far, offer some samples and discuss possible ways that the oral histories and other products in this cooperative effort might be shared. The CCHA invites everyone to the program at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Historic Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro.
While the main goal of the N.C. State team is to study the changing language of life-long county residents, the project will also save the stories of those residents about life in Chatham County — providing a rich historical resource for the future. The 100-plus interviews of Chatham residents of all ages and backgrounds will not only preserve Chatham’s unique language traditions but also will provide a window into the lives of long-time residents. CORA’s hosting Miles for Meals Hunger 5K in March
PITTSBORO — CORA is hosting the Miles for Meals 5K run and 1 Mile Fun Walk starting at 8 a.m. on March 29 at Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro.
This new event will bring individuals and families together to raise awareness about the severity of childhood hunger in Chatham County and raise money to help alleviate the problem.
Speed walk, casually stroll, jog or take a chip-timed run. Participants are encouraged to form a team, bringing together friends, family and even their dogs (the course is dog and stroller friendly!) to challenge themselves to complete the course and raise additional funds. Those interested are encouraged to register in advance to receive reduced rates, including a special rate for kids 14 and under, to encourage them to be active and to participate in their first 5K. All proceeds will support CORA’s SNACK! program. SNACK! (Summer Nutritional Assistance for Chatham Kids) distributes food to more than 1,500 children who depend on federal school meals during the school year, but who have little or no replacement for this nutrition in the summer. SNACK provides participants with enough nutritious food to ensure that they have three meals per day plus snacks for each day that school is not in session during the summer. It costs CORA $150 to feed each child in the SNACK program.

Highfalls Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention upcoming March 14
The 85th Annual Highfalls Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention will be held at North Moore High School Auditorium on Saturday, March 14. The auditorium is located on North Moore Road between High Falls and Robbins.
Registration for participants will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per person for an evening of entertainment that begins at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. A concession stand will be open throughout the evening. Cash prizes and ribbons will be given for the following categories: bands, fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, singer, dancing, bass fiddle, dobro, piano and most promising young talent. Trophies will also be given for the first, second and third place bands.
This event is sponsored by Highfalls Elementary K-8 School with the proceeds being used to benefit the school. J.J. Moore will emcee this event where some of the best musicians in the state can be heard.
