I really enjoyed my chat last week with Jerry “Twig” Wood III, president of Brookwood Farms in Siler City, which is featured in this week’s newspaper.
One thing that didn’t make it into the piece — Wood spoke proudly of his operation’s approach to making barbecue and meat. He compared it to Brookwood’s competitors, Hormel and Smithfield.
“Most of those guys cook the barbecue in some sort of steam method, with artificial smoke and stuff like that,” Wood said. “Whenever you buy it, you get the flavor out of the sauce. You’ve got bland meat with sauce. Ours in turn, we want you to taste our meat and then we’ll compliment it with sauce. It’s just night and day with our competitors.”
Wood also spoke about how Mountaire Farms “really diluted the workforce,” which was an interesting little tidbit. I didn’t follow up on that, but now I wish I had.
Now, into this week’s business column. We’ll have four items instead of the regular three because a couple warrant special mention.
Northeast Chatham real estate firm changes name
Bold Real Estate, formerly known as Domicile Realty, kicked off the new year with new branding. The brokerage firm offers listings in Briar Chapel, The Preserve at Jordan Lake, Governors Village and homes across Chatham and other counties, and has a sister operation that has listings in Governors Club. The firm was founded in 2005, and you can find them online at boldre.com. The company said in a press release that it was aiming to continue to serve any client looking for a home, whether it was their first purchase or a multi-million dollar house.
“The market has evolved, and so have we,” said Broker-in-Charge Kristine Holm. “We’re excited to make this bold move and we’re looking forward on providing expert service to all of our clients for decades to come.”
The Creative Goat craft store opens in Pittsboro
Saturday featured the grand opening of The Creative Goat, a new craft store located at 630 East St., Suite 9 in Pittsboro, in the Food Lion shopping center across from Pittsboro Town Hall. I haven’t been yet, but I’m loving the goat aesthetic. On its Facebook page, The Creative Goat said the grand opening day “left us with a smile on our face” and promised future classes and other events. Change in leadership at Siler City Merchants Association, Downtown Advisory Committee
Oasis Fresh Market and Deli Owner Jackie Adams has resigned as the president of the Siler City Merchants Association and as the head of the Downtown Advisory Committee for the Town of Siler City. Adams, who ran for Siler City Mayor last year and finished third of three, announced the decisions last week. Her term on the Downtown Advisory Committee was set to expire next year, according to the town website.
Starrlight Mead hosting medieval sword demonstration
So this isn’t something you see every day. The Starrlight Mead winery is hosting a medieval sword demonstration from 12:15 to 1 p.m. this Saturday at its 130 Lorax Lane location in Pittsboro. The Durham Dire Drakes medieval fight club, which was recently featured on the History Channel, will give a demonstration following the Namaste Meadieval yoga event. This kid-friendly event will, according to the Facebook Event, allow attendees to “jump into the arena for a chance to whack a knight.”
This just may be the only chance you can get in Chatham County to take a swing at a knight, seeing as how knights are pretty much a thing of the past, unless you play sports at Chatham Charter School.
