PITTSBORO — If you aren’t a fan of defense, Tuesday night’s contest between Northwood and East Chapel Hill wasn’t for you.

The two clubs squared off in a 3A Big Eight Conference contest which was fiercely battled and not for the faint of heart before Northwood prevailed 37-22.

“Obviously, we played pretty well on defense,” said NW Coach Cameron Vernon who’s club improved to 7-6 in league play and to 13-10 overall. “It was a physical, methodical pace, and our girls battled and found a way to win. With us on the bubble for the upcoming state playoffs, every win is crucial.”

All told, nine different Lady Chargers scored in the contest, with Chandler Adams being the lone double-figure scorer with 10 points. Myla Marve added 10, and then Rae McClarty five.

“We didn’t play that well offensively, but we had a lot of players step up and score,” added Vernon. “It was good to see so many get in on the action.”

Northwood shot just 31 percent (14-45) from the field, but held East Chapel Hill to only 22 percent, including eight field goals in 37 attempts, and 0-of-6 shooting from behind the arc.

McClarty made the lone trey out of 11 attempts for the locals and added three rebounds while Jyreah Smith chipped in two points, thee boards, one assist, and four steals, Jaela Harris four points, a rebound and three steals, Adams six rebounds, and Marve four boards and a steal.

East Chapel Hill was led by 11 points from Kayla Characklis.
