SILER CITY — Chatham Charter suffered its first loss of the 2019 spring season last week with a disappointing 4-1 decision to Cornerstone Academy.

Chatham Charter (6-1, 6-1) scored in the opening inning behind base hits from Trevor Golden and Noah Carter but never scratched again in the contest.

This allowed Cornerstone (3-4, 4-7) to rally with a run in the second behind Carter Bloom single and pair of stolen bases, and a Max Lipford sacrifice fly to tie the game, and then tack on a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to steal the 4-1 win from Chatham Charter. Two costly errors resulted in three of the runs by the Cardinals to be unearned.

Chatham Charter managed just five hits in the loss with Golden going 2-for-3 with a run and a walk while Jaron Hendrickson was 1-for-2 with a walk, Kennedy 1-for-2 with a walk, Connor Murphy 1-for-2, and Noah Carter added two walks and an RBI. Murphy also was 1-for-2 in stolen bases in the contest.

Golden took the loss on the mound after the lefty worked six innings and allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), three walks and struck out four.

Carter hurled the final inning and yielded one hit, one walk and two runs (none earned).

Cornerstone was led by a 2-for-4 effort from Drew Carter who also drove in a run while Carter Blum was 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks, Lipford 1-for-2 with an RBI, Nathan Townsend 1-for-4, and Johnny Dean 1-for-3 with a double.

Max Green started the game and worked 4.1 innings while allowing three hits, one run, five walks and striking out five.

Jackson Henderson picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals after hurling the final 2.2 innings and yielding one hit and striking out three.
