John Tipton Royal, 90, a resident of Durham Regent Retirement Community, passed away November 12, 2018.
John was born May 7, 1928, in Salemburg, NC, to the late John Robert Royal and Eleanor Hale Tipton. He is also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Ball Royal. He is survived by his sister, Catherine Brazwell of Salemburg. John will also be forever remembered and loved by his numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, family and dear friends.
John was a graduate of Salemburg High School and attended Edwards Military Institute. He served in the Army and was sent to Korea. He was awarded three medals, including the Korean Service Medal with 1-star bronze service medal. After serving his country, he worked as a milk tester and a truck driver, delivering oil and gas.
John and Shirley were residents of Pittsboro, NC for over 30 years until their move to Durham Regent. They enjoyed camping and traveling the US. John was a member of the VFW Post 7313 in Pittsboro. John Tipton was a friend to many, with an engaging smile and often sporting his “Korean Veteran” hat.
Memorial service in celebration of his life will be held November 29th, at 2 p.m. at Durham Regent in Durham. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the memorial service. A graveside internment at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church cemetery in Pittsboro will follow the memorial service.

The family would like to extend appreciation for the care provided to John by physicians and staff at the VA hospital in Durham, during his recent illnesses.
