Former Northwood teacher faces charges

A former Northwood teacher faces multiple charges, including child sex crimes, in connection with texts and verbal communication with a student.

Jasmine Shabrika Murphy, 27, of Windsor, has been charged with attempted sexual act with a student, indecent liberties with a student, extortion, and cyberstalking.

The name of the victim, a juvenile under the age of 18, has been withheld. 

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office told the News + Record that a report alleging inappropriate verbal and text communications between a teacher and student was filed on May 31. At that time, Murphy, the accused, was an employee of Chatham County Schools assigned to Northwood High School. She’s no longer employed by the school.

Following a criminal investigation, Murphy was arrested on Sept. 2 and charged with attempted sex act with a student, indecent liberties with a student, extortion, and cyberstalking. She was issued a written promise to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on Monday, Sept. 12.
