WILSON — Just three days removed from an opening-round loss to host Wilson, the East Chatham 10U All-Stars faced the daunting task of beating the same bunch to remain alive in Little League District 6 third round play in Wilson.

And the local squad battled the powerful Wilson All-Stars to the bitter end in the rematch before succumbing 3-0 to be eliminated.

East Chatham closed district play 1-2 in what turned out to be a loaded field of some very talented teams.

With the exception of the top of the third inning, East Chatham was basically perfect in its upset bid minus being able to push a run across.

East Chatham left six runners on in the contest including a pair in each of the first and third innings.

Agonizingly enough for the locals, Wilson scored all three runs in the of the third inning, and all were unearned and came with two outs. Wilson had two walks coupled with an EC error and wild pitch led to the runs as East Chatham pitcher Bryce Huneycutt even struck out the side.

East Chatham placed runners on in the home half of the first inning when Huneycutt singled to center with one down and Bauer Bowling followed with a walk. A strikeout and a ground out ended the threat.

James Wright smacked a one-out single in the third for East Chatham and Huneycutt reached on an error to put runners at first and second. Once again Wilson got out of the jam, this time with a 3-0 lead, by virtue of a strikeout and fly out.

From that point forward East Chatham would muster only a walk by Joshua Johnson in the fourth and a single by Farrell Blackburn in the fifth before going down in order in the sixth.

Blackburn was 1-for-1 in the contest to lead East Chatham at the plate while Wright and Huneycutt were both 1-for-3.

Huneycutt took the loss on the mound after working four innings and allowing one hit, three runs (all unearned), five walks and striking out four while Johnson went 1.2 innings and yielded two hits, no runs and a walk, and Finn Sullivan .1 inning on two pitches to retire a Wilson batter.
