PITTSBORO — In recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Month, the Chatham County Dept. of Social Services, in partnership with the Chatham County Council on Aging and Chatham Health Alliance, invites the community to a Senior Resource Fair on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the Western Chatham Senior Center in Siler City. The event will cover the serious topic of learning about the signs of self-neglect and prevention, and it will also include fun activities, food and music.

WHAT: Elder Abuse Awareness Senior Resource Fair

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7

WHERE: Western Chatham Senior Center on 112 Village Lake Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344

WHO: Chatham County Department of Social Services – Adult Services Unit

Self-neglect is one of the most common forms of elder abuse. It occurs when an older adult intentionally or unintentionally does not meet their essential needs. These needs include food, water, shelter, clothing, hygiene and medical care. The goal in Adult Services is to combat self-neglect by significantly reducing isolation and the loss of social connections or support systems.

Elder Abuse Awareness is recognized annually in North Carolina, and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is recognized on June 16 nationally.

Event attendees can obtain information about the impact of self-neglect on older adults, prevention, as well as access to several community agencies and resources such as Caring Transitions, Bio-One, Liberty Home Care, Gentiva Hospice, Adult Medicaid, PACE, CORA, and Central Piedmont Community Action — to name a few.

Free goodie bags, hot dogs, desserts, beverages and chips will be available to attendees, while supplies last. Agency vendors will be set up indoors. Transportation can be provided with pick-up from a central location in Pittsboro for seniors in need at no cost. For more information about the event or to schedule transportation, individuals may contact Janelle Lewis at 919-642-6946.
