MIAMI, Fla. — Pittsboro’s own and former Northwood star Austin Brice is coming on strong in 2019 for the Miami Marlins.
Brice, who celebrated his 27th birthday on June 19th, has become one of the most reliable relievers out of the Marlins’ bullpen and was particularly impressive in the month of June, when the right-hander saw work in 11 games and allowed just one earned run while striking out nine and collecting a win and three holds.
Last Friday evening, Brice recorded a hold down in Miami in the Marlins’ 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies after going one inning and retiring the side.
Six days earlier, Brice had picked up his first win of the season in relief in Philadelphia in a 5-3 victory by Miami. The local product went one inning in that outing and mowed down two of the Phillies batters that he faced.
For the season, Brice is 1-0 with a sharp ERA of 2.23 with 25 appearances and 32.1 innings worked. Brice has allowed just 24 hits, 14 walks, hit five batters, yielded 10 earned runs and fanned 29 while recording a WHIP of 1.175.
A 9th round selection in the 2010 June Amateur Major League Baseball Draft by the then-Florida Marlins, Brice saw his first Major League action in 2016 with the Miami Marlins before joining the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2017 and 2018, the latter of which he posted a 2-3 record.
Miami is coached by former New York Yankee and Greensboro Hornet legend Don Mattingly and is currently 32-50 on the season and in 5th place in the National League’s East Division.
