Posted

Betty Morrison Gunter, age 88, of the Asbury Community in Chatham County, NC, died Monday, April 13, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.

A good and virtuous woman has exchanged this world of sin, sickness, and sorrow for one of perfect peace and rest. Betty reflected throughout her life Christlike traits which were observed by all who came in contact with her. Her smile and words of kindness brought blessing and encouragement to friend and family alike. Displaying those traits throughout her life have earned her lasting testimonies associated with each of these titles; Loyal and faithful Wife for over 60 years; Proud, loving, and doting Mother; Grandmother; and Great-Grandmother; Faithful Christian. Even during her last days of Suffering and pain, she displayed a humble, childlike trust in her Lord and Savior. Assured of His promises to her, she rested, in faith, upon His loving kindness found in His Word.

Betty was born in Lee County, NC on March 8, 1932 to the late John Robert Morrison and Clara Cummings Morrison. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Leonard Newton Gunter, Sr.; and siblings Robert Lee Morrison, Herbert Watson Morrison, Maggie Belle Morrison, Rufus Cameron Morrison, Lewis Clinton Morrison, Chalmers Carr Morrison, Ruby Oldham Morrison, John Robert Morrison, Jr. and Sarah Ann Morrison. She was the last of her loving siblings.

Betty was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and an active member of the Susanna Wesley Women’s Circle. She worked many years for Kayser-Roth Hosiery Mill in Pittsboro and worked as a childcare provider at Carolyn’s Nursery.

She is survived by children, Leonard Newton Gunter, Jr. and wife Roxie, Linda Gunter Greer and husband Malcolm and John Edward “Eddie” Gunter and wife Terri, all of Sanford; grandchildren, Mickey and Laura Woodard of Cary, Travis and Elena Gunter of New Orleans, Monica Gunter of Bear Creek, Joseph Bullock and wife Jessica of Raleigh; Karen Bullock Ammons and husband Joel of Sanford, Tiffany Gunter Hinnant and husband Zach of New Hill, Adam Gunter and wife Olivia of Chesapeake, VA, Evan Gunter and wife Lauren of Sanford; great-grandchildren, Savannah Rose Gunter, K.J. A graveside service was held Friday, April 17, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church cemetery with Rev. Donald Burns and Rev. Steve Johnson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the cemetery fund at Asbury United Methodist Church, c/o Roxie Gunter, 4565 Chatham Church Road, Sanford, NC 27330.

Proverbs 31:10 puts forth the question: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” In using the word “find” the writer is asking who has attained or acquired this title. Our response to this question? Exemplified by her loving devotion and loyal dedication to husband, family, and Christ, Betty earned this title. “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.” (v.30-31)
